Dikes, enormous pumps and a huge amount of engineering were necessary to turn the former Zuiderzee into dry, fertile land — and eventually an entire province. Nowadays, Flevoland comes with carefully planned roads, towns and fields, and we're crossing it on land that until quite recently was underwater. No snorkels needed for this ride.
