This patch of land between Brabant and Limburg was once a huge, almost impassable raised bog. People eventually figured out that the stuff making the landscape so difficult to cross was also quite useful as fuel, and started massively digging it out. Peat extraction turned the landscape into a network of canals, settlements and farmland, while the old bog itself became a natural barrier between the two provinces, so much so that the Dutch military used the terrain and its waterways as part of the Peel-Raamstelling defensive line before the Second World War. Most of the original peat is long gone, and parts of the Peel are now being made wetter again to restore the remaining high bog and its ecosystem.
